Calvary Response to COVID-19

     Yesterday the WHO announced that the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 has become a pandemic at the global level.  Since that announcement multiple governmental agencies, sports leagues, colleges and school districts, among others have swiftly taken drastic measures.  While we trust that every organization is doing what is best for people, this also has a tendency to create panic.

     Here at Calvary Baptist Church McAllen we are committed to care well for all our people, especially our children and our Senior adults, who are more vulnerable.  Our pastoral staff has been discussing our response to this situation for several days now but after the latest number of organizational responses, we have intensified our efforts to get the latest information and take the most appropriate measures.

Most Current Plan

     The most recent information we have received from Hidalgo County is that there are no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our county as of today.  Their recommendation is that organizations increase their hygiene response.

    At this point we plan to continue all of our regular activities, including church office schedule, programs and services.  We are taking and recommending strict measures to protect every person who comes on our campus (please see the list of diligent measures below).  You are part of the solution.  So please take the time to read the measures below and act on them.  As someone else has said, our approach and our admonition is to "Be Careful not Fearful."

     Nevertheless, we will continue to monitor the situation and will have contingency plans in place should they be deemed necessary.  (The situation is changing daily and lately by the hour).  Although at this point we are not cancelling any gatherings, if we do, we will communicate that via this blog, our constant contact data base, our website and social media (Facebook and Instagram).

Spiritual Response

     As children of God we are reminded that our strength and assurance comes from the Lord.  Our lives, our church and our eternity are in his hands.  We have the responsibility to be good stewards of what he has given us and we should exercise utmost wisdom in all of our decisions.  But we should not become victims of fear and panic.

     The Scripture reminds us as the Psalmist makes a commitment of faith,

Psalm 46:1-2 (NIV)

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea

    
     The writer of this Psalm thinks about the worst natural disasters that could come and the fierceness of war.  Yet his confidence is in the Lord.  He twice declares, "The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress" (7, 11).  That is where our assurance lies.  We have a God who reigns, who loves us and who holds us in his hands forever!

    We will be diligent to take any measure necessary to ensure the safety and well being of each person in our congregation.  But we encourage each other to not give in to fear and panic.  Instead, let us focus our energy on prayer.  Texas Baptists have developed a simple prayer acronym (A CROWN) to help us pray through this.  I encourage you to read it and use it as you pray for this situation.

Current Measures at Calvary

     We have implemented enhanced sanitation efforts in all buildings, classrooms, and common areas.

1. Nursery, Preschool and Children:
1. We are sanitizing all toys, cribs and areas children touch (We normally do this but we are enhancing efforts);
2. We will conduct an online training for our staff and volunteers in regard to sanitation over the next week bringing everyone up to date;
3. We will put away our sensory bins (rice, sand, play dough stations) until further notice.
4. We will continue to ask staff and volunteers who are sick or have any cold-like symptoms to not come until they are well.
5. We will continue to not allow parents to drop off children with a fever or cold-like symptoms.
2. Students:
1. All enhanced measures are being implemented in the classrooms and common areas of student ministry;
2. The Student Center Café will remain open on Sundays and Wednesdays but enhanced measures for hygiene and sanitation will be implemented as well as volunteer and staff training;
3. Staff and volunteers who are sick or have any cold-like symptoms are asked not to come until well;
4. Students who are sick, have a fever, or cold-like symptoms are asked to stay home until well;
5. Our students who are serving at Beach Reach this year have received information and instructions on how to take necessary precautions.  Beach Reach is a ministry of Texas Baptists Student Ministries.
3. Adults:
1. According to the CDC recommendations for faith-communities, older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.  Such People who are at higher risk are encouraged to avoid crowds as much as possible.  If you fit that criteria we encourage you to stay home.  We are making plans to live stream our Sunday services and will share that information soon for those who are not able to attend in person.
2. We are implementing enhanced sanitation efforts for our classrooms, common areas, and worship center.
3. We encourage any adult who has cold-like symptoms, fever or is otherwise sick to stay home.  See information above regarding live streaming of worship services.
4. Our Wednesday night supper will resume after spring break and we are making sure that the highest hygiene and sanitation standards are maintained as food is prepared and served.  
5. Our community ministry programs such as Bread of Life, VITA tax-preparation, and ESL will be monitored and evaluated to ensure everyone is safe.
4. Worship Services:
1. Greeting: we encourage individuals to avoid handshakes, hugs and kisses.  Try fist bumps or a holy wave!
2. Giving:  While we will still pass the offering plates during our worship services, we encourage everyone to move to our e-giving platforms, which include web giving, a mobile app and giving by text.  This minimizes the amount of hands that handle money and envelopes.
3. Communion: We will continue to exercise high standards of hygiene in preparing the elements of the Lord's Supper.  Furthermore, we will double-cup the communion elements placing the piece of bread in the bottom cup and the juice in the top cup to avoid cross contamination.  Our deacons and ushers will use gloves when handling the trays.
5. Summer Travel, VBS and Summer Camps.  At this point there are no major trips scheduled for the spring.  We are currently moving ahead with planning for VBS, Summer Camps and Valley Project.  However, we will monitor the situation, implement and communicate contingency plans should they be deemed necessary.

General Information

Top Ten things we encourage everyone to do:

1. Wash your hands with soap and water often and encourage others to do the same;
2. Cover your cough with something other than your hand;
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;
4. If you are sick stay home;
5. If your children are sick keep them home;
6. If you experience fever, cough and shortness of breath call a doctor;
7. If anyone in our congregation or area is diagnosed with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) please report it to our church office or one of our staff immediately;
8. Pray, pray and pray (see suggested prayer guide);
9. Seek opportunities to minister to people in need and to offer hope to those who are experiencing fear;
10. Take advantage of opportunities to share the gospel with those who do not know the Lord.

Plan del Equipo de Predicación

     Este mes he instituido un plan para un equipo de predicación en todos nuestros servicios dominicales.  El equipo principal de predicación consiste de siete (7) personas (otros que no están en el equipo principal predicarán ocasionalmente).

     Chad Mason, Paulo Gatan, Marcus Rodriguez y un servidor (Julio Guarneri) seremos el equipo de predicación principal en inglés.  Julio Varela, Eder Ibarra, Daniel de León y un servidor (Julio Guarneri) seremos el equipo de predicación principal en español.  Compartiremos más acerca de nuestro equipo de predicación luego.

     Continuaré predicando la mayoría de los domingos en inglés mientras el equipo de predicación en inglés tendrá una oportunidad mayor a años previos de compartir el púlpito.  También incrementaré mi predicación en el servicio de español (aproximadamente dos veces al mes) mientras los otros miembros del equipo en español tomarán su turno.  Este plan me permitirá pastorear a los tres servicios como pastor general al mismo tiempo de proveerle a la congregación el beneficio de escuchar a otros predicadores dotados.  (También me permite compartir el privilegio y el trabajo).

     Mi oración es que este plan nos ayude a afirmar nuestra unidad como iglesia y nuestro compromiso a un modelo de liderazgo compartido para todo lo que hacemos en Calvary.  No queremos depender de una sola persona or personalidad.  Somos un cuerpo y guiaremos como equipo.  El pastor general continúa teniendo la responsabilidad de ser líder de equipo.

     Favor de orar por este equipo.  Ora para que Dios continúe hablando con poder a su iglesia.  Anima a los que predican.

El Dr. Varela, Asociado Interino para CEE

     Julio Varela es nuestro Asociado Interino para el Ministerio en Español.  Esta posición la cual fue de tiempo completo y quedó vacante en el 2019 ahora es de tiempo parcial en nuestro presupuesto 2020.  Es interino porque su futuro depende en el desarrollo de la posición del pastor para el ministerio en español tiempo completo (ver la explicación al respecto abajo).

     Estoy muy agradecido que el Dr. Varela haya aceptado mi invitación para llenar esta necesidad durante este tiempo importante de transición en nuestra iglesia.

     Nuestra Constitución y Reglamentos marca las pautas para el proceso de llamar a miembros del equipo pastoral y de contratar al personal de apoyo.  Con el objetivo de continuidad y efectividad, el Pastor General tiene la responsabilidad de contratar a pastores en forma interina (artículo II.II.E.1, p. 9).  Puedes ver el artículo II (Personal y Empleados) de nuestra Constitución y Reglamentos aquí.  Es una bendición que en el tiempo de Dios el Hno. Varela estuvo disponible y dispuesto a aceptar esta asignación.

     Julio Varela es un pastor y profesor cuyo objetivo ministerial es hacer discípulos por medio de la enseñanza de la Palabra de Dios: "Creo que al equipar a líderes espirituales ayudamos a cumplir la Gran Comisión."  El Hno. Varela es oriundo de Torreón, Coahuila, México y ha servido en las siguientes capacidades,

• Pastor de Ministerios Estudiantiles en Grace Bible Church de Colorado Springs, Colorado
• Profesor a la distancia de Grace School of Theology (desde julio del 2018 hasta la fecha), clases en línea

     Como asociado interino a tiempo parcial para el ministerio en español en Calvary, el Dr. Varela se reportará al Pastor General con la responsabilidad de proveer cuidado pastoral y apoyo al liderazgo en áreas asignadas del ministerio en español, incluyendo, entre otras cosas,

• Servir como el representante del equipo pastoral a los Grupos de Conexión
• Predicar en el servicio en español ocasionalmente (ver el blog del plan de predicación aquí)
• Conducir sesiones de consejería pastoral y hacer visitas al hospital según la necesidad y la asignación
• Reunirse con los que desean unirse a la iglesia, y cuando se ofrezca bautizar a los nuevos creyentes
• Asistir en servicios fúnebres y bodas según se le asigne 
• Enseñar en el Instituto de Capacitación Calvary los miércoles por la noche
• Servir como el representante del equipo pastoral a WIT en español

     Te pedimos que ores por Julio y Alma Varela al continuar su servicio aquí en Calvary y por el discernimiento y dirección divino para ambos futuros, el de los Varela y el de Calvary.

     La posición que el Dr. Rolando D. Aguirre tuvo como Pastor del Ministerio en Español y Líder del Equipo de Discipulado es una posición de tiempo completo y queda vacante actualmente.  Esta plaza necesita cambiar en título, responsabilidad y alcance.  La plaza y el perfil para ella será muy distinta de la cual el Pastor Rolando ocupó.  Estoy trabajando con el comité de personal para revisar la descripción de trabajo, el título y el perfil.  Una vez lista la presentaremos a la iglesia para que elija a un comité de búsqueda, idealmente durante nuestra Iglesia en Conferencia el 19 de abril del año presente.  (Vea el Artículo II.II.2, p. 8 donde se encuentran la pautas de nuestra Constitución y Reglamentos para este proceso).

     Una vez que esta plaza de tiempo completo sea reestructurada, la plaza del asociado al ministerio en español pudiera cambiar o quedarse igual.  Eso se determinará luego.  Para entonces la plaza de asociado pasará de interino a permanente y se seguirá el protocolo correcto para llenarla.  Así que ambas posiciones están bajo desarrollo:

1. Pastor del Ministerio en Español (tiempo completo), y
2. Asociado al Ministerio en Español (tiempo parcial)

El Hno. Varela está llenando la segunda en manera interina.  Favor de orar por este proceso.

     Estoy confiado que Dios tiene grandes cosas para este año y para el futuro del ministerio en español y para Calvary en general.  Seamos discipuladores.  ¡Qué su reino se extendido! ¡Y que Dios reciba toda la gloria!

Preaching Team Plan

     As of this month I have instituted a preaching team concept for our Sunday morning worship services.  The primary preaching team consists of 7 people (others outside the team will preach on occasion).

     Chad Mason, Paulo Gatan, Marcus Rodriguez and I (Julio Guarneri) will be the primary preaching team in English.  Julio Varela, Eder Ibarra, Daniel de León and I (Julio Guarneri) will be the primary preaching team in Spanish.  We will share more about the preaching team later.

     I will continue to preach most Sundays while the English language preaching team will have a greater opportunity than previous years to share the pulpit.  I will also significantly increase my preaching in the Spanish service while alternating with the Spanish language preaching team.  This plan allows me as a Lead Pastor to care for all of our three services while also providing Calvary with the benefit of hearing other gifted preachers.  (It also helps me share the privilege and the work load).

     I pray it will help us to affirm our oneness as a church and to affirm our commitment to a shared leadership model for all we do at Calvary.  We do not want to depend on only one person or personality for anything.  We are a body and we will lead as a team, while the Lead Pastor continues to have the responsibility of being the team leader.

    Please pray for this team.  Pray that God will continue to speak powerfully to his church.  Encourage those who preach.

Dr. Varela, Interim Associate for SLM

     Julio Varela is our Interim Associate for the Spanish Language Ministry.  This position which was a full-time position and became vacant in 2019 is now a part-time position in our 2020 budget.  It is interim because its future depends on the development of the full-time Pastor for SLM position (see explanation about that below).

     I am so thankful that Dr. Varela accepted my invitation to fill this need during this important time of transition for our church.

     Our Constitution and Bylaws spells out the process for calling pastoral staff and for hiring support staff.  In the interest of continuity and effectiveness, the Lead (Senior) Pastor is given the responsibility to hire interim pastoral staff (Article II.II.E.1, p. 9).  You can access Article II of CBC's Constitution (Staff and Employees) here.  We are blessed that in God's timing Bro. Varela was available and willing to accept this assignment.

     Julio Varela's is a pastor and professor whose ministry objective is to make disciples by teaching them the Word of God: "I believe equipping spiritual leaders helps fulfill the Great Commission."  Bro. Varela is originally from Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico and has served as,

• Pastor of Student Ministries at Grace Bible Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado
• Adjunct Professor at Grace School of Theology (July 2018 to date), teaching classes online
• Professor and staff, including having the role of IT director and Registrar, at Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas (July 2007--May 2019)
• Pastor of the Hispanic Ministry at Open Door Bible Church, Belton, Missouri (2003-2007)
• Computer programmer and analyst at Aluprint S.A. de C.V., San Luis Potosi, SLP, Mexico (1996-2001)

     The Varela's, Julio and Alma, have been members of Calvary, where they have served in the teaching and worship ministry since 2015.  Bro. Varela's education includes,

     As Part-Time Interim Associate for Spanish Language Ministries at Calvary, Dr. Varela is responsible to the Lead Pastor for providing pastoral care and leadership support in assigned areas of the Spanish Language Ministry, including, among other things,

• Serving as the pastoral liaison to Spanish Language ABFs (Grupos de Conexión)
• Preaching in the Spanish Language service on occasion (see my post on the preaching team plan here)
• Conducting pastoral counseling sessions and make hospital visits as needed or requested
• Visiting with new member prospects and support the new member process, including baptizing new believers
• Assisting in funeral services and weddings as requested
• Teaching in the Spanish Language training institute on Wednesday nights
• Serving as the pastoral liaison to WIT en español

     We ask that you pray for Julio & Alma Varela while they continue to serve here at Calvary and for God's discernment and direction for both their's and Calvary's future.

     The position that Dr. Rolando D. Aguirre held, Pastor for Spanish Language Ministry and D-Team Leader, is a full-time position and is it currently vacant.  This position needs to change in title, responsibility and scope.  The position and the profile for this position will look very different from the one Pastor Rolando filled.  I am working with the personnel committee to revise the job description, the title and the profile.  Once it is ready we will present it to the church so that a search committee can be elected by the church, hopefully at our April 19 Church in Conference.  (See Article II.II.2, p. 8 for CBC's search committee's bylaws provision).

     Once the Full-Time position is restructured, the part-time associate for SLM position may either change or stay the same.  That remains to be determined.  At that point the associate position will go from interim to permanent and the appropriate process to fill it will be followed.  So there are two different position under development:

1. Pastor for Spanish Language Ministries (full-time), and
2. Associate for Spanish Language Ministries (part-time)

Bro Varela is filling the second one on an iterim basis.  Please pray for this process.

     
     I am confident that God has great things this year and in the future for our Spanish Language Ministry and for Calvary in general.  May we make disciple-makers.  May His kingdom be extended.  May God receive the glory!

Apoyando al Pastor Rolando al Salir

     Después de aproximadamente doce años de ministerio en Calvary McAllen, el Pastor Rolando Aguirre ha aceptado el llamado para servir en la iglesia Park Cities Baptist Church en Dallas.  Al hacer el anuncio hoy, experimentamos tanto gozo como tristeza.  Amamos a Rolando y nos duele que se vaya.  Ha sido parte de nuestra familia espiritual y de nuestra identidad.  Estamos contentos por él porque sabemos que está siguiendo el llamado de Dios.  Esta nueva oportunidad lo permitirá usar sus dones y talentos en la extensión del reino de Dios.

     Ya que el Dr. Aguirre ha buscado el liderazgo del Señor en oración y ayuno, y ya que entendemos que esta es la voluntad de Dios, creemos firmemente que esto será de beneficio para su ministerio, para nuestra iglesia hermana, Park Cities, y para Calvary.  Si Dios está guiando, entonces es bueno para todos aunque no sea fácil para todos.  Somos una iglesia enfocada en el reino.  Estamos comprometidos a la misión de Dios más allá de nuestras cuatro paredes.

     Sin embargo esta no ha sido una decisión fácil para Rolando y para la familia Aguirre.  Ellos han amado a Calvary y al Valle Río Grande y consideraron quedarse indefinidamente.  No obstante, después de muchos meses de sentir el llamado de Dios, de múltiples conversaciones, y de mucha oración, están convencidos que esto es lo que sigue en el plan soberano de Dios.

Un Ministerio Creciente y Vibrante en Calvary 

     Cuando el Pastor Rolando llegó a Calvary nuestro ministerio en español consistía de un grupo pequeño quienes se reunían en el parlor los miércoles por la noche.  Desde ese entonces Dios lo ha usado para levantar un equipo de líderes, desarrollar múltiples programas en español y crecer en asistencia en el servicio de las 12:30 PM.  El servicio en español cuenta con la asistencia mayor de cualquiera de nuestros tres servicios dominicales.  Los programas de WIT en español, el Instituto de Capacitación Calvary, Evangelismo Explosivo y alcance cuenta con fuerza y mucha vida.

     La posición de Rolado Aguirre en Calvary ha sido como Pastor del Ministerio en Español y Líder del Equipo de Discipulado.  Aunque la mayoría de sus responsabilidades han sido en el área de español, también ha tenido asignaciones generales.  Ha dado liderazgo al los programs en inglés EQUIP, WIT, y ha supervisado a los pastores Marcus y Susan.  Ha servido en cada una de esas área con fidelidad y excelencia. 

     Estamos agradecidos por el liderazgo del Dr. Aguirre y su inversión en nuestra iglesia.  Calvary no es la misma debido a su liderazgo.  ¡Calvary en el año 2020 es más fuerte, más saludable, más diversa, y mejor en todos los sentidos!  Los miembros del servicio en español sirven en todos nuestros comités y en nuestro diaconado.  Los hermanos del ministerio en español ofrecen una fuerza de voluntarios a los ministerios de Pan de Vida, Niños y el Cuatro de Julio.
     
     Al salir el Pastor Rolando estamos confiados que Dios ha levantado un ministerio con líderes fieles y comprometidos.  El ministerio en español esta posicionado con fuerza y crecimiento para el futuro.

Último Domingo y Despedida (8 y 9 de Febrero)

     El último día de Rolando en Calvary será el domingo 9 de febrero.  Tendremos una oración de comisión en cada uno de nuestros tres servicios ese mismo domingo.  El Hno. Aguirre principiará su transición a Dallas casi inmediatamente mientras Janet y los niños permanecen en el Valle para concluir su año escolar.

     Tendremos una despedida para Rolando y su familia el,

Sábado, 8 de febrero a las 6:00 PM en el Centro Estudiantil.

     El nuevo papel del Dr. Aguirre en la iglesia Park Cities Baptist Church, Dallas, será como Pastor Asociado de Enseñanza y del Ministerio en Español.  Tendrá la oportunidad de predicar y enseñar a nivel general pero su asignación principal será dirigir el grupo pequeño en español dentro de la iglesia a revitalizarse y crecer hacia la multiplicación.  Rolando ha compartido que sus dones son aptos para establecer nuevos ministerios y luego seguir al próximo.  También ha dicho que las iglesia misionales aprender a decir "adios."  A veces enviamos a otros.  A veces somos enviados.  Las discipuladores misionales capacitan, envían y son enviados.

     Oremos por el Pastor Rolando, la familia Aguirre y nuestra congregación durante este tiempo de transición y de confiar en el Señor.

Vacancias en el Personal de Calvary en Español

     Habrá anuncios futuros en cuanto a las vacancias en el personal de Calvary en Español pero comparto información inmediata que es relevante y que pudiera contestar algunas preguntas.

     Con la salida del Pastor Rolando, tenemos dos vacancias en Calvary en Español:

1. Pastor del Ministerio en Español y Líder de Discipulado (Tiempo Completo)
2. Asociado del Ministerio en Español (Tiempo-Parcial) 

     Nuestro personal actual tiene varias responsabilidades y las necesidades del ministerio en español son varias.  Por lo tanto queremos asegurarnos que haya personal adecuado al ministerio.  He estado en consulta con el comité de personal para discutir los siguientes pasos.

     Hemos ocupado al Dr. Julio Varela como Asociado Interino a Tiempo Parcial en el Ministerio en Español (ver #2 arriba) quien principiará su empleo en Calvary el 27 de enero.  (Esta será una posición que ha estado vacante desde la primavera del 2019).  Compartiré más acerca del Dr. Varela en próximas comunicaciones.

     Llenar la posición que Rolando dejará vacante se llevará tiempo.  En primer lugar, la posición cambiará título y nivel de responsabilidad.  El Pastor Rolando llenó un papel vita por los primero doce años que Calvary en Español.  Sin embargo, al entrar al 2020 entramos en una nueva época de Calvary en general y de Calvary en español particularmente.

     Al desarrollar el título y descripción de la nueva posición el Pastor General y el comité de personal, y eventualmente la iglesia, mantendremos un par de cosas en mente:

1. Seremos sensibles a las necesidades particulares del ministerio en Español y proveeremos liderazgo y cuidado pastoral de tal manera que continuemos haciendo discipuladores para la gloria de Dios entre las naciones. 
2. Buscaremos la salud, fuerza y crecimiento de la iglesia en general.  Estamos comprometidos a funcionar como una iglesia y nuestra equipo pastoral necesita dar liderazgo y proveer ministerio para ambas porciones de nuestra congregación: inglés y español.

     El papel que el Hno. Aguirre llenó predicando el servicio en español casa cada domingo y llevando todas las necesidades de liderazgo y cuidado pastoral para Calvary en español fue singular a sus dones y para los primeros doce años del ministerio.  El futuro será diferente.  El púlpito en el servicio en español será compartido por el Pastor General y por otros predicadores dotados en nuestra congregación.  El liderazgo y las necesidades de cuidado pastoral serán asignadas a miembros del equipo pastoral.  El título y la descripción de trabajo del siguiente pastor que se una a nuestra equipo serán distintos a los del Pastor Rolando.

Supporting Pastor Rolando in New Call

     After approximately twelve years of ministry at Calvary Baptist Church, McAllen, Pastor Rolando Aguirre has accepted a call to serve on the staff of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas.  As we make this announcement today, we experience both joy and sadness.  We love Rolando and it hurts to let him go.  He has been part of our church family and identity.  We are happy for him because we know he is following God's call.  This new opportunity will allow him to use his gifts and talents in the extension of the kingdom of God.

     Since Dr. Aguirre has sought the Lord's leadership in prayer and fasting, and since we understand this to be God's will, we firmly believe that it will be good for his ministry, good for our sister church, Park Cities, and good for Calvary.  If God is in it, then it is good for all of us even if it is not easy on all of us.  We are a kingdom-minded church.  We are committed to God's mission beyond our four walls.

     Needless to say this has not been an easy decision for Rolando and the Aguirre family.  They have grown to love Calvary and the RGV and often saw themselves as staying indefinitely.  However, after many months of sensing God's call, multiple conversations, and much prayer, they are convinced this is what is next in God's plan.

A Growing and Vibrant Ministry at Calvary

     When Pastor Rolando came to Calvary our Spanish language ministry consisted of a handful of people who met in the parlor on Wednesday nights.  Since then God used him to raise a team of leaders, develop multiple Spanish language programs and grow the Sunday morning Spanish language service attendance.  The 12:30 PM service counts with the largest attendance of any of our three Calvary Sunday services.  The WIT en español, Instituto de Capacitación Calvary (our Spanish language training institute on Wednesday nights), Evangelismo Explosivo and outreach programs of the SLM are vibrant and growing.

     Rolando Aguirre's position at Calvary has been Pastor of Spanish Language Ministry and Discipleship Team Leader.  Although most of his responsibilities were in the Spanish language area, he also had church-wide assignments.  He gave leadership to EQUIP and WIT and he supervised Pastors Marcus and Susan.  He served in each of those areas faithfully and with excellence.

     We are so thankful for Dr. Aguirre's leadership and his investment in our congregation.  Calvary is not the same because of his leadership.  Calvary Baptist Church in 2020 is stronger, healthier, more diverse, and overall better!  Members from the Spanish Language Ministry serve in all of our committees and in our deacon body.  People from the Spanish service are a volunteer force that help keep Bread of Life, Children's Ministry, and Fourth of July stay strong.

     As Pastor Rolando exits we are confident that God has raised a ministry with faithful and committed leaders.  The Spanish language ministry is poised for strength and future growth.

Last Sunday and Farewell Reception (February 8 & 9)

     Rolando's last day at Calvary will be Sunday, February 9th.  We will have a commissioning prayer for them at each of our three services on that same Sunday. Bro. Aguirre will begin his transition to Dallas shortly thereafter while Janet and the children remain in the RGV so they can conclude their school year.

     We will have a farewell reception for Rolando and his family on:

Saturday, February 8th at 6:00 PM
in the Student Center.

     Dr. Aguirre's new role at Park Cities Baptist Church Dallas will be Associate Pastor of Teaching and Spanish Language Ministry.  He will have opportunity to preach and teach at the church-wide level but his biggest assignment will be to lead a small Spanish language group within the church to revitalize and grow toward multiplication.  Rolando has shared with the pastoral staff and the Spanish congregation that he feels his gifting is for establishing new ministries and then moving to the next one.  He also has said that missional churches say "good-bye" often.  Sometimes they send others.  Sometimes they are sent.  People in missional churches train, send and are sent.

     Please pray for Pastor Rolando, the Aguirre family and our congregation during this time of transition and trusting the Lord.

Staff Vacancies at Calvary en Español

     There will be future announcements regarding the staff vacancies for Calvary en Español but I share immediate information that is relevant and might answer some questions.

     With Pastor Rolando's exit, we have two staff vacancies in the Spanish Language Ministry:

1. Pastor of Spanish Language Ministry and DT Leader (Full-time)
2. Associate for Spanish Language Ministry (Part-time)

     As we look at our current staff who is spread out thin and the many needs of our Spanish Language congregation, we want to make sure we appropriately staff the ministry.  I have been in consultation with the personnel committee to discuss the steps ahead.

     I have hired Dr. Julio Varela as an Interim Part-Time Associate for Spanish Language Ministry (see #2 above) who will begin his employment at Calvary on January 27.  (This is a position that has been vacant since the spring of 2019).  I will share more about Dr. Varela in upcoming communications.

     Filling the position that Rolando will leave vacant will take sometime.  In the first place, the position will change title and scope.  Pastor Rolando filled a vital role for the first twelve years of Calvary en Español.  However, as we enter 2020 it is a new era for Calvary in general and for Calvary en español in particular.

     As the new position title and description is developed by the Lead Pastor and the personnel committee, and eventually approved by the church, a couple of things will guide us:

1. We will be sensitive to particular needs of the Spanish language ministry and we will provide the leadership and pastoral care it requires to continue to make disciple-makers for the glory of God among the nations;
2. We will seek the health, strength and growth of the entire church.  We are committed to functioning as one church and our pastoral staff team needs to give leadership and provide ministry for both English and Spanish language portions of our church.

     The role that Bro. Aguirre filled preaching in the Spanish service almost every Sunday and caring for all the leadership and pastoral care needs of Calvary en español was unique to his gifting and to the first twelve years of the ministry.  The future will look different.  The pulpit in the Spanish service will be shared by the Lead Pastor and other gifted preachers in our congregation.  The leadership and pastoral care needs will be assigned to specific staff members.  The position title and job description of the next pastor that joins our team will be different than that of Pastor Rolando.

     We will communicate at important junctures and bring a recommendation to the Church in Conference at the right time.

     Please pray for our pastoral staff team, the personnel committee and the Spanish language congregation as we follow the Holy Spirit faithfully.
