BUSQUEMOSLO.

Year-End Updates

As we come to the end of this very interesting year 2020, I have a couple of updates for you.  In the video above I share with you about the election of the executive pastor search committee, staff updates, the opportunity for year-end giving and the upcoming special January 3 Prayer Sunday.

Executive Pastor Search Committee

We thank all those of you who submitted names for this committee and who participated in the voting.  Here is a summary report of the secret ballot election:

  • Ballots submitted: 131 electronic + 45 hard copy = 176 total (1 invalidated ballot)
  • Five individuals with the most votes: Sylvia Riddle, Laura Heflin, Tracy Hughes, Gene Vaughan and O.E. Brand (this is now our executive pastor search committee)
  • Executive Pastor job description and compensation: approved by 86% vote,
    • In favor: 126 electronic ballots + 25 hard copy ballots = 151
    • Against: 3 electronic ballots + 17 hard copy ballots = 20
    • Did not mark box for or against: 2 electronic ballots + 2 hard copy ballots = 4
The search committee has met and elected a chairperson: Sylvia Riddle.  Please keep the search committee at the top of your prayer list as they carry out this important work in behalf of our congregation.  Read more about this position in my previous blog post from November 24: Executive Pastor Search

Staff Updates

In addition to the Executive Pastor search we have two other staff vacancies: Student Pastor and Spanish Language Ministry Associate.  These vacancies will not be filled until after Calvary calls an Executive Pastor.  However, we are very thankful for those who are currently serving as interims.  Eli Garza is our interim student ministry associate (part-time).  Frank San Martin is our interim college and young adults associate (part-time).  Julio Varela is our interim Spanish language ministry associate.  Dr. Varela, who has served on a part-time basis during 2020 will become full-time in January 2021.  Please pray for each of these and for God's direction in the future of these important ministries.

Year-End Giving

We are so thankful for the generosity of God's people during this very difficult year.  Thanks to this generosity we were able to carry our ministry and meet needs of people in McAllen, in the RGV and in other parts of the world.

As of December 20, our church had given $1,473,653 during an extremely difficult year.  People have given in person, online and via U.S. mail.  We praise God for this provision.  Even so at that point we were $173,745 short of our 2020 budget.  Thankfully we were able to operate in the black during the year by cutting some expenses and because of some staff vacancies.  God through your generosity allowed us to do the basic ministries and to meet all our obligations.

There is still an opportunity to do year-end giving through Thursday, December 31.  Year-end gifts will allow us to take care of our December needs.  Anything beyond that will go to unmet needs and will allow us to be in a better position for 2021.  For your donation to be counted as a 2020 contribution it must be given by Thursday, December 31 in person or online or by mail postmarked no later than December 31.

The church office will be open this week Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  You can also give online here: Calvary E-Giving.

January 3 Prayer Sunday

We have set aside the first Sunday of the year for prayer.  During our Sunday morning services we will be singing and praying.  We will worship God, thank Him for his blessings, confess our sins, and ask him on behalf of our nation, pray for healing during this pandemic, and pray for our church and its ministry in 2021.

Join our Sunday morning service ready to pray with us!

HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!  GOD HAS GOOD THINGS FOR HIS PEOPLE IN 2021!  LET'S SEEK HIM!

Si has estado orando ya, síguelo haciendo.

Executive Pastor Search

At our November 15 Church in Conference, the congregation heard reports, elected incoming deacons for 2021 active service, approved the nominating committee's proposed new church committee member and officers, and approved the 2021 church budget.  You can read more about all this in my November 4 blog post (see link above).

In addition to these important matters, I also shared with the congregation about a staff realignment and search process approved by the personnel committee.  That was the first time this announcement was made to the congregation.  In this blog post I share with you the slide presentation and the next steps, including the congregation's input in this process.

This post consists of three portions: (1) Explanation of the Pastoral Team Organizational Chart for 2021; (2) A Call to submit nominees for the Executive Pastor search committee; and (3) A Call for a congregational vote to elect the Executive Pastor search committee along with the respective job description and compensation.  Each of these processes require your prayerful support and participation.

Pastoral Team Organizational Chart for 2021

The slide presentation shared with the Church in Conference can be viewed by clicking on the link in the heading above.  It may be helpful to know that there are three categories of staff at Calvary:

  • Pastoral:  Called through a search committee process and by church vote
  • Associates: Ministry personnel, usually with a higher education degree, and hired
  • Support:  Include ministry assistants, custodians and other personnel

Please note that the explanation below does not include ministry assistants and other support staff but focuses on pastoral staff and ministry associates.

Team Changed in the Past Ten Years.  In the past ten years our pastoral staff team has changed much both in terms of positions and persons who occupied them.  In 2010 we had eight full-time pastors, including a Pastor for Pastoral Ministries and Administration, a Pastor for Music and Worship, and a Pastor for Adult Discipleship, among others, in addition to a full-time Church Business Administrator and a part-time Community Ministries Associate (Ten total: Nine full-time and one part-time).  Throughout these years we have made changes to adapt to the needs of a growing and changing congregation and to keep personnel costs at a minimum.

Team Organization at the beginning of 2020.  At the beginning of 2020 our pastoral staff team consisted of six full-time pastors and one part-time Spanish Language Ministry associate in addition to a full-time Worship and Media Coordinator, a part-time Community Ministries Associate, and a part-time Communications Associate (Ten total: Seven full-time and three part-time) as slides two and three of the presentation above show.  The reduction of the pastoral staff team was accomplished by combining some position and/or distributing certain responsibilities among current team members.  This was the right team for our time leading up to the start of the pandemic.

Interim Team Organization in 2020.  Since Pastors Rolando Aguirre and Marcus Rodriguez were called away to other churches this year two full-time pastoral team positions are currently vacant.  That means that currently we have four full-time pastors, one full-time worship and media coordinator, a part-time Community Ministries Associate, a part-time Communications Associate and three part-time Interim Associates, who are temporarily filling pastoral vacancies (Ten total: Five full-time and five part-time) as slide four of the presentation shows.  Also since Pastors Rolando and Marcus supervised several other staff members, more team members are reporting to the Lead Pastor in this interim period.  While all of these shifts have taken place in the midst of the pandemic, this current interim plan is not sustainable.  In order for our church to be effective we need to have a better organization for 2021.

Pastoral Team Organization Plan for 2021.  After much prayer, deliberation and consideration we have put a plan in place which will allow us to move more effectively into the future.  As slide five of the presentation shows this plan includes the formation of an Executive Pastor position (see slides six through eight for more details about this position).  This new position will take roles which were formerly assigned to Pastor Rolando Aguirre and other previous pastoral staff members.

However the Executive Pastor will not focus exclusively on the Spanish Language Ministry.  The former Associate Pastor for Spanish Language Ministry will now become the SLM Discipleship Pastor.  In other words, we will still have a pastor whose assignment is focused on Spanish Language Ministry but that pastor will not be the only one relating to SLM.  It is expected that the Lead Pastor and the rest of the pastoral team will relate to the whole church (English and Spanish).  We want to avoid having two teams for two congregations.  On the contrary our vision is to have one team that serves the whole church.

The Executive Pastor and the Mobilization and Multiplication Pastor (new title for what was formerly MAGI) will report directly to the Lead Pastor while the rest of the pastoral staff and associates will report to one of those two (Ten total: eight full-time and two part-time).  Because of the Executive Pastor's role it is important that the search to fill other pastoral staff vacancies do not take place until an Executive Pastor is called.

The funding for this plan is already included in the approved 2021 budget.  So what remains now is to pray, give and call the Executive Pastor.

Submit Nominees for Executive Pastor Search Committee

Our church bylaws (Article II.II) provide the process for filling a pastoral staff vacancy.  This process involves a search committee.  The bylaws stipulate that the search committee should meet the following criteria:

  1. Consist of five members
  2. Committee members should have been members of Calvary for at least one year
  3. Calvary employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to serve
  4. There should be a minimum of two men and a two women in the committee
  5. Election of the committee should be done by secret ballot
  6. Nominees receiving the highest numbers of vote constitute the search committee
So the first step is for the congregation to submit names that meet criteria 2,3 and 4 above.  Calvary members may do so in one of the following ways:
  1. Electronically using the following form: Nominees for Executive Pastor Search Committee between 11-24-20 and 12-06-20
  2. Nomination form hard copy submitted on Sunday 11-29-30 or Sunday 12-06-20 in the offering boxes
  3. Nomination form hard copy submitted to the church office during regular office hours between 11-30-20 and 12-04-20 (call the church office before going to make sure it is open)
  4. Nomination form hard copy sent by mail to 1600 Harvey St, McAllen, 78501 postmarked by 12-05-20
  5. Nomination form hard copy sent via email to office@calvarymcallen.org no later than 12-06-20

The nomination form hard copy can be downloaded by clicking on the respective links above.  There will also be hard copies available in the foyer on Sundays and in the office during the week of 11-30-20.

Once the names are received in the church office, they will be screened in accordance with the bylaws qualifications.  Those that meet the criteria will be placed on a secret ballot form which will be made available to the congregation electronically and in hard copy by 12-13-20.

Vote to Elect the Executive Pastor Search Committee

We are calling for a vote to elect the Executive Pastor search committee by secret ballot on Sunday, December 13, 2020.  Church members will receive the following either in electronic or hard copy form by then:

  1. A list of all the names submitted by the congregation for search committee nominees who meet the bylaws criteria
  2. A proposed job description and compensation for the Executive Pastor position
Church members will vote on the two items listed above on Sunday 12-13-20 either electronically or by secret ballot hard copy in the offering boxes of the worship center.  (Those who are not able to vote electronically or in person on 12-13-20 may come by the church office to do so on 12-11-20).  Each voting member will select the top five names from the list provided and will check "Yes" or "No" on the job description and compensation line.  The five people with the highest amount of votes will constitute the search committee.

We hope the search committee can get organized by year end and begin the search process early in 2021.  Once the search committee is ready to recommend a candidate for the position, it will be brought to the church for vote.

This entire process requires prayer from the nomination of the search committee to the calling of an Executive Pastor.  If you have started praying already, please continue to so.  If you have not started yet, please start doing so now.

Texas Baptists Virtual Annual Meeting

I hope you are preparing and planning to participate in our Calvary Church in Conference on Sunday evening, November 15 at 6:30 PM.  For more information about that you can read my blog post Our Annual Meeting!

In addition to that opportunity I want to invite you to participate in the Texas Baptists first ever virtual annual meeting.  This is a rare opportunity because attending this meeting of Texas Baptists involves travel and lodging during weekdays.  However, this year it will be a virtual meeting on Monday, November 16, and Tuesday, November 17, in the evenings.

The annual meeting will consist of two different type of events which involve the work of God's kingdom through Baptists in our state:

Monday, November 16 at 6:00 PM: Business Session (Registered Messengers only)

In this meeting messengers from the various Baptist churches in Texas will be able to elect the new Convention officers, vote on the Convention's 2021 budget, and participate in other business.  A messenger is a member authorized by a qualifying church to vote and participate in this business session.  (It does not mean that he has to be a speaker or take a particular message from the church.  Other organizations call this role "delegates").

If you are a Calvary members and are interested in participating in this capacity please contact our church office by Friday, November 13 before noon in order to register you so.  You may call the office phone and ask for Andree Lopez or you may email her directly at andree@calvarymcallen.org  Once our office registers you, you will receive an email from the Texas Baptists office with information for the zoom meeting and further instructions.

Tuesday, November 17 at 6:00 PM: Celebration Session (no registration required)

This meeting is open to everyone, not just messengers.  It will consist of worship, a message from Dr. David Hardage, executive director, a sermon from Dr. Michael Evans, convention president and stories about what our mission offerings through the Cooperative Program have accomplished.

No registration is required for this celebration.  It will be live-streamed via the following:

So choose one of those ways and join in to see what God is doing around our state, through our church in cooperation with other churches.

You can access documents with the recommendations and reports to be presented in the Annual Meeting Business page.  In particular:

Additionally this weekend will be the inaugural annual meeting of Texas Baptists en Español.  If you would like to learn more about that you can read my blog post in Spanish here.

Our Annual Meeting!

As you know this year has been a historically different year in many respects for our church and our people.  Nevertheless God has continued to use our church to be a blessing, to continue ministry in multiple ways, and to provide for the work He has entrusted to us.  We praise Him and give Him the glory for all He has done!

Looking toward 2021, there is still some uncertainty about how things will go.  Yet, we are certain that God has a purpose and a plan for our church.  We are also certain that God will provide exactly what we need to do His work in terms of personnel, leaders, volunteers, finances and ministry.

When God's people in the wilderness had satisfied their thirst drinking water from a rock, they wondered if God could satisfy their hunger and provide them bread and meat in the desert.  The Psalmist captures this question in Psalm 78:20-25.  We are confident that the same God who gave us "water from a rock" in 2020 will give us "bread and meat" in 2021.

On November 15 we will have our Church in Conference in a hybrid format (see below).  Although we have more than one Church in Conference each year, we may think of our November one as an annual meeting.  It is at this time that the congregation gets to vote on next year's church budget, next year's incoming deacons, and next year's incoming committee members.

If you are a Calvary member by now you should have received a packet in the mail with the proposed 2021 budget documents and the candidates for active deacon service.  If you have not received it, please contact our church office.  Also the mail out electronic documents are included in this blog post for you to view and/or download.

We are so thankful for the work of the stewardship committee, the deacon screening and nominating committee, and the nominating committee in preparing their recommendations.

Budget Question and Answer Session Corrected Date:

Please note a correction to the budget cover letter that went out in the mail.  Our 2021 Budget Question and Answer session will be held on Tuesday, November 10 from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM (not on Wednesday, November 11).

The Q&A session will take place via zoom.  All members are welcome to join the session.  The meeting information is as follows: Meeting ID: 944 8886 7099 Passcode: 939402 or you can join directly by clicking on this link: 2021 Budget Virtual Q&A

Hybrid Format for Church in Conference

The November 15 Church in Conference will be a hybrid meeting (Student Center and Zoom).  Those choosing to come in person may come to the Student Center and follow all of the health and safety protocols we observe for Sunday worship services (i.e.: wear masks, social distancing, self-screen, wash hands, use hand sanitizer, etc.).  Those choosing to join via zoom may do so by using the following meeting information: Meeting ID: 944 3600 8572 Passcode: 725596 or you can join directly by clicking on this link: Church in Conference

If you plan to join the Church in Conference via zoom please make sure that your full name shows on the screen so that we can verify that only members are being counted for quorum and given the opportunity to ask questions, request the floor and vote.  You may also want to become familiar with the chat feature of the zoom application.  Asking questions, making motions and requesting the floor will need to be typed in to the chat before it is recognized by the moderator.

Agenda Items

During the meeting members will hear reports, get an update on personnel changes and plans to fill vacancies, vote on incoming committee members, vote on deacon candidates, and vote on the 2021 budget among other things.

Several days before the November 15 meeting, a complete digital packet with the agenda and reports will be available for downloading from our webpage.

For those participating remotely digital voting options will be offered.

Voting Options

Due to COVID-19 we will offer three options for voting.  It is important to note that only Calvary McAllen members may vote.  In the interest of maintaining anonymity, we will depend on an honor system where each voting member will vote only once using only one of the following options, since we will not require the person's name on the ballot.

  1. Vote in person on November 15 at 6:30 PM in the Student Center
  2. Vote digitally using this link: Digital Ballot (the digital ballot will close on November 15 at 7:45 PM)
  3. Absentee vote in hard copy during office hours (8:30 AM to 11:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM)

The nominating committee consisting of Leo Leal, chair, Tracy Hughes, Marissa Courtney, Janine Havener, Jeff Bridwell, Gilda Rios, Aurora Estrada, David Heflin and Jorge Gordillo, presentes the following nominations slate for 2021.

Below you can see and/or download the budget documents:

Please prepare in prayer to participate in this important meeting that will determine much of our ministry direction for 2021.  Much has changed but our God is faithful.  We are trusting God for his future.

He was the God of Calvary McAllen in 1957.  He was the God of Calvary McAllen in 2019.  He was the God of Calvary McAllen in 2020.  And He will be the God of Calvary McAllen in 2021 and beyond.

We will continue to make disciple makers for the glory of God among the nations!
