Gracias Servidores de Calvary

      La verdad es que no expresamos nuestra gratitud lo suficiente a los servidores que hacen la obra de Dios en Calvary McAllen.  No me refiero tanto a los pastores y el personal a quienes apreciamos mucho, pero a los líderes, obreros, maestros y otros voluntarios quienes sirven semana tras semana, mes tras mes, año tras año fielmente.  Este verano pausamos para darte las "gracias" at ti.  (Nota que hay una fecha abajo para tu calendario.  No la pases por desapercibido por favor).

     Efesios 4:11-13 nos recuerda del papel de los pastores y ministros en relación a cada miembro del cuerpo de Cristo.

     11 Él mismo constituyó a unos, apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; y a otros, pastores y maestros, 12 a fin de capacitar al pueblo de Dios para la obra de servicio, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo. (NVI)

     Cristo constituyó apóstoles, profetas, evangelistas, pastores y maestros en la iglesia para que capaciten al "pueblo de Dios" para la obra de servicio.  El trabajo de la iglesia le pertenece al pueblo de Dios.  Cada creyente tiene un llamado y un don para edificar al cuerpo de Cristo (Romanos 12:4-5; 1 Corintios 12:4-7; 1 Pedro 4:10).  Los pastores y ministros tienen el privilegio y la responsabilidad de capacitar a los miembros para el ministerio.  Pero el ministerio le pertenece al pueblo.     

     Así es como funciona Calvary McAllen.  Aunque estamos agradecidos por nuestro equipo pastoral y el personal de la iglesia, el trabajo de la iglesia no sería posible si no fuera por los cientos de miembros de Calvary que utilizan sus dones espirituales y talentos.  Cada semana hay personas finas quienes enseñan a nuestros niños, trabajan con nuestros estudiantes, dirigen nuestros Grupos de Conexión, cantan con el grupo de alabanza, tocan un instrumento, operan equipo técnico, sirven como ujieres, hacen decisiones en comités, animan a otras mujeres, desafían a varones, preparan alimentos, cortan el césped, visitan a los enfermos y a los ancianos, comparten el evangelio, ministran al necesitado, dirigen ministerios a la comunidad y sirven en otras múltiples formas.  Lo que sucede en Calvary nunca se lograría por un equipo de personal (staff) solamente.  ¡Gloria a Dios por el ejercito de servidores de Calvary quienes hacen el ministerio!

     Este año hemos crecido en nuestra compresión de la Gran Comisión.  Estamos aprendiendo a hacer discipuladores por medio de los distintos ministerios.  Cientos de vidas han sido tocadas en nuestra iglesia y más allá.  Docenas de personas han confiando en Cristo y lo han seguido en el bautismo del creyente.  Se han fortalecido familias.  Se han animado a los varones.  Las mujeres han crecido espiritualmente.  Los estudiantes han respondido al llamado.  Los niños han sido bendecidos.  Las personas han experimentado la presencia y el poder de Dios.  Y Dios ha hecho todo esto posible por medio de sus servidores fieles, principalmente por medio de los miembros y discipuladores excelentes que tenemos en Calvary.

     Eso es lo que se requiere para continuar el ministerio en Calvary y es lo que se requiere si hemos de ser iniciadores de un movimiento de multiplicación.  Para ver la multiplicación de discípulos, grupos y congregaciones necesitamos ver a cada creyente haciendo la obra del ministerio.

     Al prepararnos para concluir la temporada de verano y principiar otro año escolar, pausamos para expresar nuestro aprecio a todos los servidores de Calvary (los miembros quienes sirven a varias capacidades).  Si tu eres uno de ellos, recibe nuestra gratitud.  Si tu estás agradecido por el ministerio de otros, exprésaselo.

Thank you CBC Servants!

     We don't say "thank you" often enough to all the servants who do the work of God at Calvary Baptist Church, McAllen.  I am not referring to the pastors or the staff, whom we appreciate, but to the leaders, workers, teachers, and other volunteers who serve week after week, month after month, year after year so faithfully.  So this summer we pause to say "thank you" to you!  (There is a save the date below.  So don't miss it!)

     Ephesians 4:11-13 reminds us of the role of pastors and ministers in relation to every member of the body of Christ.

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (NIV)

     Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers to the church in order to equip "his people" for works of service.  The work of the church belongs to His people.  Every believer has a call and a gift to build up the body of Christ (Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:4-7; 1 Peter 4:10).  Pastors and ministers have the privilege and the responsibility of equipping the members for the ministry.  But the ministry belongs to the people!

     That is how Calvary McAllen works.  Although we are thankful for our pastoral team and our staff, the work of the church would not be possible if it were not for the hundreds of faithful Calvary members who use their spiritual gifts and talents.  Every week there are fine people who teach our children, work with students, lead Adult Bible Fellowships, sing in the choir, play an instrument, operate media equipment, serve as ushers, make decisions in committees, encourage women, challenge men, prepare food, mow the grass, visit the sick and the elderly, share the gospel, minister to the needy, lead ministries to the community, and serve in multiple other ways.  What happens at Calvary could never be accomplished by a staff team alone.  Praise God for our CBC servants who do the ministry!

     This year we have grown in our understanding of the Great Commission.  We are learning how to make disciple-makers through our various ministries.  Hundreds of lives have been touched within our church and beyond.  Dozens have trusted Christ and followed Him in believer's baptism.  Families have been strengthened.  Men have been encouraged.  Women have grown spiritually.  Students have answered the call.  Children have been blessed.  People have experienced God's presence and power.  And God has made all of it possible through our faithful servants, primarily our excellent church members and disciple-makers.

     That is what is required to continue the ministry at Calvary and what is required if we are going to be catalysts of a multiplication movement.  In order to see the multiplication of disciples, groups and congregations, we need every single believer to do the work of ministry.

     As we get ready to wrap up our summer season and begin another year, we want to pause to express our appreciation to all our CBC servants (church members who serve in various capacities).  If you are one of these, receive our thanks.  If you are thankful for others, express your thanks to them.

Bendiciones Veranales

     El verano a menudo es una temporada ocupada y divertida especialmente en la vida de la iglesia.  Es bueno detenernos en medio del verano para reflexionar en las bendiciones de Dios.  ¿Cuáles son las bendiciones que tu puedes contar este verano?
    
     Me gustaría brevemente reflexionar en algunas bendiciones desde mi perspectiva.  El tiempo y espacio que dedicaré a cada una no se compara a la dimensión de la bendición pero prefiero reflexionar brevemente que no hacerlo del todo.

61o Aniversario de Calvary

     La primera bendición que deseo mencionar es un año más en la historia de nuestra iglesia.  Este domingo pasado celebramos nuestro 61o aniversario como congregación.  Parece que fue hace poco que disfrutábamos del banquete conmemorando el 60o aniversario de Calvary en el centro convencional de McAllen.  Durante este año nos hemos acercado al desarrollo de la visión para emprender un movimiento de multiplicación de discípulos desde Calvary y por todo el Valle Río Grande.

     Al movernos hacia adelante con esa visión nuestros servicios de adoración continuan vibrantes, nuestro personal sigue dirigiendo y trabajando arduamente, y nuestros grupos continuan el proceso de hacer discípulos.  Hemos tenido muy buena Escuela Bíblica de Vacaciones, nuestros estudiantes participaron en el Campamento Zephyr, nuestros niños fuero al Campamento Tejas, muchas personas han salido en viajes misioneros de corto plazo, celebramos con nuestra comunidad en una gran fiesta del 4 de julio, y nuestros estudiantes se encuentran involucrados en el Valley Project actualmente.  Estamos muy agradecidos por nuestro personal, nuestros líderes, nuestros diáconos, nuestros voluntarios, nuestros grupos, WIT, los equipos de alabanza y medios, los comités y los otros diversos ministerios que mantienen a esta iglesia vibrante y en misión.

Ocho Años como Pastor General

     Este lunes pasado marco mi octavo año desde que principié mi ministerio en Calvary como Pastor General.  Cuando nuestra familia llegó a McAllen, nuestro hijo mayor, Josh, se quedó en Dallas para terminar su carrera en la Dallas Baptist University y para servir en el ministerio de medios y producción de la iglesia Fielder Road en Arlington.  Nuestra hija Rachel cursaba la High School, Mia la Middle School, y Stevan la primaria.  Para ahora Josh y Rachel ya han graduado de la universidad, Mia y Stevan graduaron de la High School.  Rachel, Mia y Stevan salieron del Valle para estudiar o trabajar.  Josh se mudó a McAllen para ministrar en Calvary y Rachel se casó esta primavera pasada.  Todo esto para decir que mucho ha cambiado en ocho años.

     Estoy agradecido porque Calvary ha sido una bendición a mi familia en muchas formas.  También agradezco a mi familia por su apoyo en mi ministerio aquí.  Durante estos ocho años hemos hecho amigos y hemos experimentado el amor y el apoyo de una congregación verdaderamente extraordinaria.  Ha sido una bendición trabajar con un equipo pastoral excelente, con un equipo de diáconos de los mejores, con comités administrativos finos, y con líderes dotados.  Las palabras no son suficientes para expresar lo satisfecho que me siento al servir a Dios por medio de Calvary McAllen.  Gracias por hacernos sentirnos en casa y en familia tanto en el ministerio de inglés como en el de español.

Summer Blessings

     Summer is an often busy and fun time of the year, especially as it relates to church.  It is good to stop in the middle of the summer and reflect on God's blessings!  What are the blessings you count this summer?

     I want to briefly reflect on some blessings.  The time and space I will dedicate to each do not do them justice but I'd rather reflect briefly than not at all.

CBC's 61st Anniversary

     The first thing I want to mention is another year of blessings for our church.  This past Sunday we celebrated our 61st anniversary as a congregation.  It seems like not long ago we were sitting at the McAllen Convention Center at our 60th anniversary banquet.  During this year we have moved closer to developing a vision for catalyzing a disciple-making multiplication movement from CBC and throughout the RGV.

     As we move forward with that vision our worship services remain vibrant, our staff continues to lead and work hard, our local and global engagement continues meaningfully, and our group ministries continue in the process of making disciples.  We have had a great VBS on campus, our students attended Camp Zephyr, our children attended Camp Tejas, multiple people have gone on mission trips, we celebrated with our community holding an awesome Fourth of July tailgate, and our students are currently engaged in Valley Project.  We are so thankful for our staff, our leaders, our deacons, our volunteers, our Bible Fellowships, WIT, our choir, worship and media teams, the committees and many other ministries that keep this congregation vibrant and on mission.

Eight Years as Lead Pastor

     Yesterday marked the eighth year I began my ministry at CBC as Lead Pastor.  When our family arrived in McAllen, our oldest son, Josh, stayed behind finishing his degree at Dallas Baptist University and working for Fielder Church in Arlington in the media ministry.  Our daughter Rachel was in High School, Mia in Middle School, and Stevan in elementary.  By now, Josh and Rachel have graduated from college, Mia and Stevan have graduated from High School.  Rachel, Mia and Stevan are out of the Valley for work or school.  Josh has moved to McAllen to work for CBC and Rachel got married this last spring.  All this to say that a lot has changed in 8 years!

     I am thankful because Calvary has been a blessing to my family in numerous ways.  I am also thankful because my family has supported me in the ministry here.  During these eight years we have made friends here and we have experienced the love and support of a wonderful congregation.  I have been blessed to work with a fine pastoral team, an excellent team of deacons, extraordinary administrative committees and excellent leaders.  I cannot say enough about how rewarding it has been for me to serve God through Calvary Baptist Church, McAllen.  Thank you for making us feel at home and like familia.

Calvary People on Short-Term Trips

     We are thankful for every person in our congregation that has participated in a short-term local or global engagement trip.  Many have already returned and we are grateful for what has been accomplished.  Others are still on the field or about to leave.  We thank God for a church that offers prayerful support and often financial support.  Please continue to pray for the work in each of these places and for those who are still traveling.

     God is good!  We are blessed!  Our church, God's mission through us, and our ministries have the hand of God on them.  It is fitting that we pause briefly in the middle of a busy summer to count our blessings.  Time does not allow us to count the dozens of decisions and lives touched at CBC's VBS, Camp Zephyr, and Camp Tejas but we do not take those for granted (click on the respective links to see highlight videos).

Celebrando Comunión y Comunidad

             Como iglesia Calvary celebramos dos ceremonias muy especiales: el bautismo y la comunión.  Les llamamos a estas dos "ordenanzas" porque el Señor Jesucristo las ordenó (Mateo 28:19-20, Lucas 22:19-20, 1 Corintios 11:23-25).  Ambas ordenanzas, el bautismo y la comunión son solamente para creyentes. 

          En otras ocasiones hemos escrito del papel importante que el bautismo tiene en la tarea discipuladora.  Hemos animado a cada discipulador a bautizar a aquellos que hacen un compromiso con Cristo y hemos animado a cada Grupo de Conexión o grupo discipulador a aprovechar estas ocasiones para celebrar y evangelizar. 

          En este blog quiero hablar brevemente de la comunión, o como solemos llamarla en nuestra tradición, la Cena del Señor.  Así como el bautismo nos permite recibir a nuevos creyentes en nuestra comunión, la Cena del Señor nos permite recordar con frecuencia aquello que nos une con Dios y mutuamente.  La obra de Cristo en la cruz es lo que nos reconcilia con Dios, es lo que nos une como hermanos y hermanas, y lo que nos motiva en nuestro compromiso discipulador.

           La Cena del Señor es al mismo tiempo un acto de adoración y una celebración de compañerismo.  Es tan importante y tan central para la comunidad discipuladora.  Durante mi sabático reciente tuve la convicción de que no celebramos la Cena del Señor con la frecuencia debida.  Así que nos insto a celebrarla más frecuentemente y más ampliamente entre nosotros.

           La aplicación de frecuencia será hecha a tres distintos niveles: a nivel congregacional, a nivel de Grupo de Conexión/Grupo Discipulador, y a nivel de cuidado pastora/diáconos/ancianos.   

Nivel Congregacional:  Actualmente celebramos la Cena del Señor el primer domingo cada dos meses.  Empezando el 5 de agosto del año presente celebraremos la Cena del Señor el primer domingo de cada mes.  En otras palabras cambiaremos de una observación bimestral a a mensual.  He hablado con el equipo pastoral, con el presidente de diáconos, y con nuestros líderes de adoración y todos están listos para hacerlo.

Grupos de Conexión/Grupos Discipuladores: Quiero animar a los GDC y otros grupos discipuladores a celebrar la Cena del Señor ocasionalmente.  Esto puede ser especialmente significativo cuando las reuniones son en casa o en algún lugar fuera del templo.  El ambiente informal de compañerismo puede proveer una experiencia más similar a la de los discípulos con Jesús en su última cena. El equipo pastoral estará listo para entrenar y asesorar a los líderes de GDC y otros grupos discipuladores en cuanto a como administrar la Cena del Señor de una forma bíblica y como preparar los elementos.  (Ve el vídeo abajo con ayudas prácticas al respecto).  También te animamos a que cuando celebran la Cena del Señor en tu grupo lo compartas con unos de los pastores para regocijarnos con ustedes.

Cuidado Pastoral/Diáconos/Ancianos:  Animamos a los pastores, diáconos y líderes de grupos discipuladores a administrar la Cena del Señor a aquellos creyentes que por razones físicas no pueden asistir los domingos a los servicios ni tampoco a las Grupos.  Algunos de estos puedan estar limitados a sus hogares o quizá estar hospitalizados o aún estar en un asilo para ancianos.  Nuestra oficina tiene paquetitos de jugo con una galletita que pueden facilitar esto o tu puedes preparar tu propio paquetito de elementos.  Por supuesto que si deseas administrar la Cena del Señor a un creyente que es paciente en un hospital or asilo de ancianos debes consultar con su enfermera(o) para asegurarte que pueda recibir los elementos. 

         Espero y es mi oración que nuestra comunidad de discipuladores se fortalezca más al celebrar la Cena del Señor más a menudo y en más sitios.  Recordemos continuamente quien es nuestro Señor, lo que El hizo por nosotros, y cual es nuestro llamado como discípulos.

Celebrating Communion and Community

             Calvary Baptist Church regularly celebrates two very special ceremonies: baptism and communion.  We call these “ordinances” because Jesus commanded us to celebrate them (Matthew 28:19-20, Luke 22:19-20, 1 Corinthians 11:23-25).  Both baptism and communion are for believers only.

              In previous blogs we have addressed how baptizing believers is part of the disciple-making task.  We have encouraged every disciple-maker to baptize those who come to faith and we have encouraged every ABF and disciple-making group to take advantage of these opportunities for celebration and evangelism.

            In this blog I want to briefly address communion, or more commonly known in our tradition, as The Lord’s Supper.  While baptism allows us to welcome new believers into our fellowship, the Lord’s Supper permits us to regularly remember that which unites us with God and with each other.  The work of Jesus on the cross is what reconciles us to God, what binds us together as brothers and sisters, and the motivation for our covenant commitment.

            The Lord’s Supper is both an act of worship and a celebration of fellowship.  It is so important and central to a disciple-making community.  During my recent sabbatical I became convicted that we do not celebrate communion often enough at CBC.  Therefore I am encouraging a more frequent and broader celebration among us.

            There are three levels at which I am leading us as a congregation to celebrate the Lord’s Supper more frequently: at the congregational level, at the ABF/disciple-making group level, and at the pastoral care/deacon/shut-in level.

Congregational Level:  Currently we celebrate communion every other month on the first Sunday of the month.  Beginning with August 5, 2018, we will now celebrate communion the first Sunday of every month during our Sunday worship services.  So we are moving from a bi-monthly observance to a monthly one.  I have spoken with our pastoral staff, our chairman of deacons, and our worship leaders and they are ready to move forward with this change.

ABF/Disciple-Making Group:  I want to encourage ABFs and other disciple-making groups to occasionally celebrate the Lord's Supper.  This can be especially meaningful for gatherings in a home or a venue away from the church campus.  The setting of fellowship closer to the Lord's last supper with his disciples can be meaningfully represented in an informal setting.  The pastoral staff will be ready to train and coach leaders of ABFs and other disciple-making groups on how to conduct the Lord's Supper in a biblical way and how elements might be prepared.  (See the video below with practical help for this).  We also encourage you to share with a member of the pastoral staff when you celebrate communion so that we can rejoice with you.

Pastoral Care/Deacon/Shut-Ins:  We encourage pastors, deacons and disciple-making group leaders to administer communion to those believers who are not able to attend Sunday worship services or ABF/Home group gatherings because they are ill at home, in a nursing home, or in hospice.  Our office has practical juice-and-cracker kits that can facilitate this or you can prepare your own kit.  Of course, when a member is in a nursing home, hospital or hospice the person administering communion should check with the nurse to make sure the patient is able to take it.

          I hope and pray that our community of disciple-makers will grow stronger as we celebrate communion more frequently and in more venues.  Let us continually remember who our Lord is, what He did for us, and what our call is as his disciples.

Comunión, Relacionamiento y Misión

     La visión Calvary de multiplicación de discípulos y de congregaciones implica que en algún momento haremos menos énfasis en algunas cosas y más énfasis en otros.

     Después de mirar este vídeo considera lo siguiente ¿Qué implicaciones tiene esta visión para Calvary en general y para Calvary en español?  ¿Qué cosas estarías tu dispuesto a quitar para enfocarnos en la Gran Comisión?  ¿Qué cosas crees que debemos añadir?

     Bishop Moses Turere, with whom CBC McAllen partners in a water well project in Kenya, talks about the contrast between rhinos and rabbits as it relates to church multiplication.

     Our vision at CBC McAllen is the multiplication of both disciples and congregations.  Although we may feel more like a rhino church we hope to resource, plant and encourage rabbit churches.
