Sabático para el Pastor General

 

    El comité de personal de Calvary ha aprobado mi sabático al principio del 2023.  El manual de personal de Calvary declara, "Al completar diez (10) años de servicio en Calvary...al Pastor General se le otorgarán doce (12) semanas de sabático."  Además, el manual también especifica el propósito del sabático: "Se recomienda que el sabático sea utilizado para nuevas experiencias, educación continua, y un tiempo de resposo, relajamiento, reflexión y renovación."

    Mi 10o aniversario como Pastor General de Calvary se cumplió en el 2020 en medio de la pandemia.  La pandemia fue acompañada por dos vacancias pastorales.  No me pareció sabio tomar un sabático durante ese tiempo desafiante para la iglesia.  Le solicité una extensión al comité de personal para permanecer mientras llamábamos al pastor ejecutivo, al pastor de discipulado estudiantil, y al pastor de discipulado en español, como también el "relanzamiento" de Calvary con su nueva estrategia después de la pandemia.  El comité gentilmente me concedió la extensión.

    Mi sabático de doce semanas principia el 2 de enero y termina el 26 de marzo del 2023.  Durante este período, David Chan, el pastor ejecutivo, será el Pastor General "Interino."  El equipo de predicación tomará turnos los domingos.  Además el Pastor Chan supervisará un programa de residencia pastoral, en el cual uno o más individuos tomarán responsabilidades pastorales para asistir al equipo pastoral y para obtener capacitación y experiencia para el residente.  Nuestros pastores y diáconos están preparados para atender las necesidades de cuidado pastoral de la congregación.

    El concepto de sabático no es común a muchas de las profesiones fuera de los ámbitos académicos y eclesiásticos.  Algunos quizá se preguntan que es un sabático y porque se les otorga a los pastores.  Es importante notar que el sabático no es una vacación extendida.  Es un período intencional que incluye estudio, reflexión, refrigerio espiritual y el calibrar prácticas de salud física y emocional.  La naturaleza del ministerio pastoral requiere tal reposo para que el pastor se mantenga saludable y para que la iglesia se beneficie de un pastorado saludable y periódicamente renovado.

    Existen otros artículos parecidos en el internet pero estos deben servir como ejemplo.

    En mi solicitud al comité de personal, escribí mis planes para el sabático,

• Resposo: Tener la oportunidad de disfrutar fines de semana y noches libres; desconectarme de correos, mensajes de texto y llamadas telefónicas relacionadas al trabajo;

• Relajamiento: Disfrutar tiempo con la familia extendida; viajar recreacionalmente;

• Renovación: Pasar tiempo significativo en oración, lectura de la Biblia, apuntando, buscando calibrar ritmos de salud espiritual y buscando la dirección de Dios en mi vida y ministerio, procesar algunas de las pérdidas sufridas durante la pandemia; tomar algunos retiros de oración en alguno de los campamentos bautistas en Texas o en el Campamento Buckner; asistir una o dos conferencias tales como la Conferencia para Pastores de Truett el del 27 al 28 de enero;

• Reflexión: Leer varios libros.  Algunos de ellos son libros que he tenido sobre mi escritorio sobre el liderazgo, misiones y discipulado.  También espero hacer más investigación en cuanto a las mujeres en el ministerio y el gobierno de la iglesia.  Como también espero escribir algo.  Sería en forma de blogs, artículos, o quizá aún un plan para un libro.

• Nuevas Experiencias y educación continua: Espero hacer investigación y aprender como publicar un libro y como producir contenido para blogs y podcasts.

Creo que estas doce semanas me servirán bien para renovación personal después de doce años de un ministerio tanto emocionante como desafiante en Calvary.

    Estoy agradecido a Calvary por su apoyo, al comité de personal por su cuidado, al personal de Calvary por su disposición a cubrir todas las áreas del trabajo durante mi ausencia.  Más que todo pido sus oraciones durante este tiempo.  Qué sea significativo y productivo para mi y que Dios cumpla su propósito en mi vida y en el ministerio de nuestra amada iglesia.  Los echaré de menos pero con ilusiónd e volver a verlos el Domingo de Resurrección.  (Predicaré el domingo 1o de enero antes de salir a mi sabático).

Lead Pastor on Sabbatical

 

    Calvary's personnel committee has approved my sabbatical leave beginning in 2023.  Calvary's personnel policies handbook states, "Upon the completion of ten (10) years of service at CBC...the Lead Pastor will be given twelve (12) calendar weeks of sabbatical leave."  Furthermore, the handbook also declares the purpose of such a sabbatical: "This sabbatical is encouraged for new experiences, continuing education, and a time of rest, relaxation, reflection and renewal."

    My ten year anniversary as Calvary's lead pastor took place in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic.  The pandemic was accompanied by two pastoral staff vacancies.  It did not seem wise to me to take a sabbatical during such a time.  I asked the personnel committee for an extension so that I could stay through the calling of an executive pastor, a student and young adult discipleship pastor, and a Spanish-language discipleship pastor and the "relaunching" of Calvary with a new strategy after the pandemic.  The personnel committee graciously granted me the extension.

    My twelve-week sabbatical leave begins January 2 and ends March 26, 2023.  During this time, David Chan, our executive pastor, will be the acting lead pastor.  Members of the pastoral staff team will participate in a preaching rotation for our Sunday gatherings, with an occasional guest preacher.  Furthermore, Pastor Chan will oversee a pastoral residency program, where one or more individuals will take on pastoral staff responsibilities to assist the pastoral team and to gain training and experience for the resident.  Our pastors and deacons are prepared to address pastoral care needs.

    Sabbaticals are not common to many professions outside of academic and religious domains.  Some of you may wonder what is a sabbatical and why do pastors take them.  It should be noted that a sabbatical is not a vacation.  It is an intentional time for renewal that includes study, reflection, spiritual refreshment and a resetting of physical and emotional health practices.  The nature of pastoral ministry requires such a leave in order for the pastor to remain healthy and for the church to benefit from a pastoral staff that is healthy and renewed periodically.

    Our state convention, known as Texas Baptists (BGCT), answers some questions regarding pastoral sabbaticals in their Sabbatical Resources page.  For a brief article from Thom Rainer you can visit his Five Reasons Your Pastor Should Take a Sabbatical.  For a little longer article that has some interesting statistics regarding pastors you can read SoulShephering's article on it.  Focus on the Family has a helpful booklet on this topic:  Sabbatical for Ministers: The Benefits for Pastors and Congregations.  There are dozens of other helpful articles that can be found on the internet but these provide a few examples.

    In my request to the personnel committee, I stated my plans for this sabbatical as follows,

• Rest: Have the opportunity to enjoy weekends and evenings off; disengage from work related emails, texts messages and phone calls;

• Relaxation: Enjoy extended family times; some recreational travel;

• Renewal: Spend significant time in prayer, Bible reading, journaling, seeking to reset rhythms of spiritual health and searching for God’s direction in my life and ministry, process some of the losses I experienced during the pandemic; take some prayer retreats either in some of our Texas Baptist encampments or Camp Buckner; attend a conference or two such as the Truett Pastors Conference on January 27-28;

• Reflection: Read several books.  Some of them are books I have had on my desk regarding leadership, missions and discipleship.  I also hope to do some research in areas such as women in ministry and church governance.  I hope to write some as well.  The writing might be in the form of blog posts, articles and potentially a book draft.

• New Experiences and continuing education: I hope to do research and learn about how to publish a book and how to produce more content for blog posts and podcasts.

I believe that these twelve weeks will serve me well to reset and renew me after twelve years of exciting but very demanding ministry at Calvary.

    I am thankful to Calvary for your support, for the personnel committee for their care, and for our staff who is willing to cover all the bases during my absence.  Most of all I ask for your prayers during this time.  That it may be meaningful and that God may accomplish his purpose both in my life and in the ministry of our beloved church.  I will miss you but I look forward to see you again no later than Easter Sunday!  (I will preach on Sunday, January 1st before I leave on sabbatical).

Julio Varela en Vista de un Llamado

 

    Nos da mucho gusto anunciar que el comité de búsqueda para el Pastor de Discipulado del Ministerio en Español elegido por Calvary recomienda al Dr. Julio Varela para este importante papel en el equipo pastoral de nuestra iglesia.  El 5 de junio será el domingo en vista de un llamado.  El Hno. Varela predicará los tres servicios dominicales y los miembros* de Calvary podrán votar después del servicio al cual asistan.    

    El comité de búsqueda, el cual fue elegido el 2 de Mayo del 2021, consiste de Polo Leal, presidente; Eder Ibarra; Jose Luis Jimenez; Faby Haro-Gama; and Reyna Cuellar.  Por los últimos doce meses el comité se reunió en numerosas ocasiones para orar, considerar el perfil del pastor que mejor cuadra con el ministerio en español de Calvary para la próxima etapa, recibir curriculums, y entrevistar personas.  Aunque hubo algunos individuos que resaltaban como muy capaces, el comité quizo esperar, y muy recientemente reanudo la solicitud de curriculums.  Fue en esta última etapa de apertura que el Dr. Julio Varela sometió su curriculum.  No le llevo mucho tiempo al comité luego de ello para decidir que él es el mejor candidato para la plaza en cuestión.

    Julio Varela ha servido como Asociado Interino del Ministerio en Español desde enero del 2020.  Habiéndose integrado al principio de la pandemia, el hermano ha servido a Calvary diligentemente y con todo el corazón, especialmente a nuestra congregación en español, durante un tiempo muy complicado.  Inicialmente el Hno. Varela sirvió a nivel tiempo parcial, luego sirvió a tiempo completo, y en junio del 2021 regresó a tiempo parcial al tomar la plaza de Vice Presidente de Asuntos Académicos en el Seminario Bíblico Río Grande en Edinburg.  Por los últimos doce meses ha servido al seminario a tiempo completo y a Calvary a tiempo parcial.

    Si la iglesia vota afirmativamente para llamarlo el 5 de junio, el Hno. Varela se integraría al equipo pastoral de Calvary a nivel tiempo completo y continuaría con algún compromiso a tiempo parcial en el Seminario.  Al haber observado al hermano los últimos dos años sabemos que él cumple con sus responsabilidades y llamado a un nivel más allá de lo que se requiere.

     Creemos que el Dr. Julio Varela posee la experiencia, dones, aptitudes, educación y salud espiritual para pastorear a la congregación en español al lado del Pastor General y el resto del equipo pastoral.  Él ama al Señor.  Él ama a la iglesia Calvary.  Y está comprometido a dirigir al ministerio en español a hacer discipuladores para la gloria de Dios entre las naciones.  Él y su esposa, Alma, han sido miembros activos de Calvary desde el año 2015 y damos gracias a Dios por ellos.

    El 5 de junio la congregación votará por balota secreta después de cada servicio.  (De acuerdo a nuestra Constitución y Reglamentos el candidato require un voto afirmativo de por lo menos 75% de los miembros* presentes que votan).  El voto incluirá al candidato y el paquete de compensación que los comités de personal y mayordomía aprobaron.  Pedimos a los miembros* que participen en oración.  Si tienes preguntas dirígete a mi, al Pastor David Chan, o al Hno. Julio Varela in View of a Call

 

     We are happy to announce that the Calvary-elected Spanish-Language-Discipleship-Pastor search committee is recommending Dr. Julio Varela for this important role in our church's pastoral team.  June 5 will be the "In-view-of-a-call" Sunday.  Bro. Varela will preach in all three services and Calvary members* will cast their vote after the service which they attend.

     The search committee, which was elected on May 2, 2021, consists of Leo (Polo) Leal, chair; Eder Ibarra; Jose Luis Jimenez; Faby Haro-Gama; and Reyna Cuellar.  For the last twelve months they met numerous times to pray, consider the profile of the pastor that best fits the Spanish Language Ministry at Calvary for this next season, receive resumes, and interview prospects.  While there were some promising prospects, the committee felt led to wait, and most recently re-opened the requests for more resumes.  It was in this last opening that Dr. Julio Varela's resume was submitted.  It did not take long after that for the committee to decide he is the best candidate for the position.

     Julio Varela has served as the Interim Associate for Spanish Language Ministry since January of 2020.  Coming in at the very beginning of the pandemic he has served Calvary diligently and wholeheartedly, especially our Spanish Language congregation, during a very difficult time.  Initially Bro. Varela served on a part-time basis, eventually he also served on a full-time basis, and in June of 2021 he went back to part-time upon taking the role of Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the Rio Grande Bible College in Edinburg.  For the last twelve months he has served RGBC at a full-time level and Calvary at a part-time level.

     If the church votes affirmatively to call him on June 5, he would join the Calvary pastoral team at a full-time level and would continue to have part-time engagement at RGBC.  As we have observed his work ethic for the last two years we know that he will always go above and beyond expectations.

    We believe that Brother Varela possesses the experience, gifting, skills, education, and spiritual health to shepherd our Spanish Language congregation along with the Lead Pastor and the rest of the pastoral team.  He loves the Lord.  He loves Calvary.  And he is committed to leading the Spanish Language Ministry to make disciple-makers for the glory of God among the nations.  He and his wife, Alma, have been active Calvary members since 2015 and we are very thankful for them.

    On June 5 the congregation will vote by secret ballot after each service.  (According to our bylaws the candidate needs to receive a minimum of 75% affirmative votes from those members* present and voting in order to be called).  The vote will include the candidate and the compensation package that the personnel and stewardship committees have approved.  We ask members* to participate prayerfully.  If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact me, or Pastor David Chan, or Leo (Polo) Leal.
